Michigan Media Access Day!

Welcome to Michigan Media Access Day!

Ever tried to get newsrooms to pay attention to a particular issue or event but had no luck? We're here to help!

Join us Saturday, Aug. 12, 2023, from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. at Fox 2 Detroit, for a day of educational workshops where you'll learn how to get your pitches in front of reporters and assignment editors and give them what they're looking for.

We ask each attendee to prepare at least one, 100-word local story idea to be edited and crafted during our workshops.

Also, plan to bring business cards and resumes for the networking portion of the event. Light refreshments will be served for breakfast, and lunch will be provided at noon.

RESERVE YOUR SPOT HERE

Event details:

Michigan Media Access Day will kick off at 10 a.m. with a packed agenda, including:

  • What journalists are looking for from you

  • How to determine which stories are newsworthy

  • Tips and tricks from public relations experts on getting your pitches noticed

  • Why diversity in coverage matters.

Those interested can use what they learned and pitch an idea to a panel of local newsroom leaders "Shark Tank"-style.

Whether you are an aspiring content creator, marketing or public relations professional, student, freelancer, or simply curious about the industry, this event is for you!

Hosts:

Michigan Media Access Day is hosted by the following affinity groups, which will also be present for networking and engagement: the Asian American Journalist Association of Michigan, the National Association of Black Journalists Detroit Chapter, the Society of Professional Journalists Detroit Chapter and the Public Relations Association of America Detroit Chapter.

Location:

We are thankful to our sponsor Fox 2 Detroit for having us in their newsroom (located at 16550 West Nine Mile Road in Southfield). For security reasons, we ask all attendees to carpool or meet at our carpool location - the main entrance of the Ascension Hospital Parking Lot closest to Nine Mile Road. Carpooling should be between 9:30 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. and drop-offs will be after 2 p.m.

Cost:

We ask for a $20 registration fee for learning/pitching attendees to cover the cost of food. Student members of the affinity organizations and newsroom representatives attend for free. Please include information in the details portion when you register for the event.
