What we're all about

AAJA's mission statement:

To provide a means of association and support among Asian American and Pacific Islander journalists.
To provide encouragement, information, advice and scholarship assistance to Asian American and Pacific Islander students who aspire to professional journalism careers.
To provide to the Asian American and Pacific Islander community an awareness of news media and an understanding of how to gain fair access.
To research and point out when news media organizations stray from accuracy and fairness in the coverage of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders.

AAJA Michigan is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that fundraises to support student scholarships, fellowships and trainings.

We also host a private consultation on a volunteer basis for newsrooms to take advantage of. Through this, newsrooms can request to have a story previewed or proof read by a member of our chapter.

This is an off-the-record service for any stories or provide experts on issues regarding race, gender, and culture surrounding Southeast Asian, Indian, Arab, Hispanic, and religious input where we can. This allows newsrooms that may not have that proofreader or editor input a chance to talk to the community that the story is directly about. In turn, this will improve coverage and restore faith in our industry we've lost during these challenging times.

To take advantage of this, please reach out to Sarah, sarahal6611@gmail.com, with your story and deadline.

AAJA Michigan is primarily for journalists, but has expanded to include producers, freelancers, students, professors, public relations and marketing professionals, lawyers and entrepreneurs.

Please consider joining our chapter. One membership applies to both national and while registering here, select Michigan as your local chapter!
